Abraham Lake and Hiking to Issacs

Nordegg is one of our favourite quick mountain getaways.  A couple days after Christmas, we decided to pack up and enjoy a few days of sunshine, outdoor fun in the mountains.  Our first day we spent relaxing along the lake edge of Abraham Lake.  Us adults enjoyed our hot coffee around a fire while the kids, explored, collected rocks, gathered ice chunks. Of course we left our mark with an inushkuk.  That evening stayed at the Shunda Creek Hostel, a rustic log cabin with wood burning stove nestled in the trees.  To our surprise we had the place to ourselves; the kids enjoyed the toys, board games and of course triple bunk beds.

After a good nights sleep we awoke to find the temperature dropped considerably overnight.  We decided to enjoy our coffee and games by the wood stove by waiting for the sun to rise. At a mere -27 degrees Celsius, we bundled up and began out 2km hike to Issacs.  Levi and I had the intentions of ice climbing but upon arriving to the waterfall the wind picked up and the kids began to get cold.  There were tears and crying.. Dad quickly made a fire to warm up while we ate lunch, then we packed up and hiked out on the frozen creek bed back to the parking lot.  I am impressed my littles made the hike despite the cold weather; I feel fortunate they love to explore and adventure!
